Genetically Modified Organism Food Labels: YES

My name is Alivia and I am the founder of Los Angeles Costume Swap and I am proof that GMO foods do indeed harm people. I was born with asthma but it wasn't until the 1990s after I had surgery that I became a severe asthmatic. I spent more than ten years trying every single medicine that existed and I could afford in hopes of managing my asthma but nothing worked. 


In January of 2012 I was told I was going to need anther surgery to remove my gallbladder. If I didn't have it removed I was told that I would probably die the next time I had an attack. I'm spiritual but not religious. However I do believe that if I was born with it within my body it was not meant to be MANually removed. So the decision to have or have not the surgery was truly vexing. 


I spoke to several people for and against the surgery and to people who had the surgery. The removal of a gallbladder is not to be taken lightly and it is life altering. For me the life necessity of what was happening was the final straw. Detoxing wasn't very difficult because I spent a little more then a week in the hospital eating nothing but jello and drinking nothing but tea, apple, and orange juice. When I left I was given strict orders to eat extremely lightly until my surgery. 


I never scheduled surgery and for me it was the right decision. I cut down my meat intake by more then 75%, I started eating mostly non GMO foods and a lot of gluten free foods. When I do eat meat it is almost always from free-range GMO feed free farms. Since I've started the new way of eating my asthma has been improving, I still have my gallbladder and I haven’t had a single instance of gallbladder trouble since I stopped eating mostly GMO foods.

I WANT TO KNOW

• Because I want to live without pain and fear of wondering when the next attack could happen. 
• Because someday I want to leave my home without my inhaler (on purpose) and know I’m going to be fine.

If GMO foods didn't cause health problems I would back it 100% as a solution to the food shortage problems. But there has been too many studies showing that GMO foods do cause problems. The results of a June 17, 2012 released report shows "genetically modified crops have harmful effects on laboratory animals in feeding trials and on the environment during cultivation. " - Earth Open Source


Researchers at the Sherbrooke University Hospital in Quebec reported finding insecticide toxins caused from consuming GMO grains in the bloodstreams of 93% of pregnant women and 80% of fetuses tested. 


In a Senate speech Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said "Monsanto's Roundup tolerant GMOs have led to the rise of superweeds that now infest more than 10 million acres in 22 states - Predicted to reach 40 million acres by mid-decade."  

All this within just one year. Is Genetically Modified Organism foods safe? So far the answer is no. If we deserve to know about product recalls and buildings are required to post signs letting us know of potential exposure to toxic substances why are we not given the opportunity to know of food that is genetically modified? Especially since there has not been a single study proving that GMO foods are safe.
